Lifestyle Travel. The First Trip.

May 23, 2026 · by Dr. O

Couples talk about the first trip for years afterward, and there is a reason. A weekend away strips out the thing that makes everything at home feel heavy. The school run. The inbox. The neighbor who waves. For a few days you get to be the version of yourselves that has time, and time turns out to be the missing ingredient in almost every marriage I ever sat across from.

My wife and I learned the most about ourselves not in our own city but on the road, where the ordinary roles fell away and we got to meet each other again as the people underneath them. So let me tell you what the first trip actually asks of you.

Two kinds of trip

The first is a weekend with a single couple you already trust. A cabin, a vineyard town, a rented house with a good kitchen and a long table. The intimacy is built in advance, by the hours you share and the meals you cook. The second is a destination built for this world, a resort or a takeover, where the entire point is a relaxed room full of people who already understand the manners and carry them lightly. Both are good. They simply ask for slightly different things from you.

Pack the agreement, not just the bag

Before you go, have the same conversation you would have before any single night, only longer, because a trip is many nights strung together and the days in between matter as much as the nights. What are we hoping for. What is only ours. What do we do on the morning one of us wakes up wanting nothing more than a book and a quiet pool.

The answer is that you read by the pool. A trip is not a performance with a schedule to hit. The best ones are mostly long, lazy, unprogrammed gaps, with a few good evenings inside them. The couples who come home wrecked are almost always the ones who treated a vacation like an itinerary of conquests. The couples who come home glowing treated it like a vacation that happened to be honest.

The real test of a trip is never the first night. It is the first morning. Can the two of you be easy with each other over coffee. If yes, everything else takes care of itself.

Discretion travels with you

The same contract you keep in any room, you carry abroad. What happens stays among the people who were there. Photographs are a conversation and a clear yes, never an assumption. And you come home as the two of you, carrying a story that belongs only to you and the people who shared it.

This is exactly the kind of weekend Sodalis is building toward for its members, in wine country and on the coast, small and curated and held to a standard, among people you have actually come to trust.
